Going Green 2009

It's Earth Day, and Nazareth is proud to announce its latest green initiative: we are one of just 18 colleges nationwide using the BioPro 190, a refinery that converts used fryer oil into earth-friendly biofuel. The College is recycling the fryer oil from its dining halls and converting it to biodiesel fuel to power a fleet of vehicles, from facilities trucks to lawnmowers. Yes, you read that right: students enjoy their French fries and then we recycle the oil for use on campus!  Watch our new video, "Adding Fuel to the Fryer," to learn more:

Of course, the biodiesel refinery is just one of the many green initiatives at Nazareth.

• We purchased four electric cars and two electric golf carts for use on campus.
• We use green chemicals as well as energy efficient motors, boilers, toilets, and lighting.
• We have adopted a wide-spread program to recycle paper, glass, and, now, fryer oil.
• Our energy management system is a computerized “smart” system that saves energy by adjusting temperature based on the number of people in spaces
• Nazareth's Go Green! student club hosted its first ever “Watch Your Waste” event last fall. The club arranged to have all garbage from campus residence halls and academic buildings deposited in one area to raise awareness of how much the campus community consumes and discards in just one day.

We have created a web page to keep the community informed about sustainability efforts. As well, earlier in the year I established a Task Force on Campus Sustainability comprised of faculty, staff, and students. I am looking forward to receiving the Task Force’s report and recommendations within the next few weeks so that Nazareth can continue to look globally and act locally by valuing the environment and going green.

I like this idea, but I wonder about the excessive number of televisions in Colie's and the Roost, especially the two flat screens in the Roost that are constantly muted. How does that reflect a "green" initiative?

As the parent of a NAZ student, I'm very excited about the efforts to make the campus greener and the students and faculty more environmentally and socially conscious. I noticed that "cage free" eggs are used in the dining halls. Since any eggs can be labeled "cage free" as long as the chickens have a very minimal amount of time outside of the cages, I'd like to suggest "certified humane" eggs, which have much more stringent requirements. Keep up the great work!
